BREATHWORK FOR HICCUPS: A RESEARCH-BASED REMEDY

Hiccups are an involuntary and annoying reflex that can be caused by various reasons, such as eating too fast, swallowing air, or even stress. While hiccups usually last for a few minutes, they can be quite uncomfortable and interfere with our daily routine.

Fortunately, there is a simple and research-based breathwork technique that can help stop hiccups in their tracks. This technique involves taking three deep breaths without exhaling, holding the breath for 15-20 seconds, and then exhaling slowly. Let's break it down further:

Step 1: Take a deep breath in through your nose.

Step 2: Without exhaling, take a second breath in (even if it’s strained).

Step 3: Without exhaling again, take a third breath in (even if it’s a very small breath).

Step 4: Hold your breath for 15-20 seconds.

Step 5: Breathe out slowly.

This technique is based on the fact that hiccups are caused by spasms in the phrenic nerve, which controls the diaphragm muscle responsible for breathing. By taking a series of deep breaths and holding your breath, you stimulate the vagus nerve, which runs parallel to the phrenic nerve, and helps to calm it down, thereby stopping the hiccups.

In a study conducted by researchers at the University of Texas, 249 participants were asked to try various hiccup remedies, including breath-holding, drinking water, and using a straw to drink water. The results showed that breath-holding was the most effective remedy, with an 88.5% success rate in stopping hiccups.

So the next time you get a case of the hiccups, remember this simple breathwork technique. It's an easy and natural way to stop hiccups without any medications or invasive procedures. Just take a few deep breaths, hold your breath, and exhale slowly. With a little practice, you'll be able to stop hiccups in their tracks in no time!
